New England in spring, blue skies and crystal sparkling waters, returning birds flying far above sun drenched clouds while warm zephyrs whisper through strands of sugar maples. I am filled with a sense of anticipation as I descend the east slopes of the Berkshire foothills and approach the center of town. Word has spread through the eclectic, vibrant music community of Western Massachusetts of an artist who utilizes his multi-instrumental prowess (saxophone, didgeridoo, clarinet, flutes, bells, whistles, harmonica, strings, keyboard, percussion) by using the elements of such disparate genres as jazz, Native American, Arabian, folk, rock, blues, classical, electroacoustic and anything else you can pick off the shelf to create a genre that is truly his own. His free improvisational style is brimming with an instinctive spontaneity. He is truly a painter who paints with sounds instead of oils. It has been said that a gifted musician has the ability to make the simple sound complex and the complex simple. This young man does both equally well, all the while being faithful to the fragile rhythms that are at the heart of Thomas Kushin.
